1.    Why did Peter's lawyer disagree with circle justice?
  • Peter's lawyer disagreed with the circle justice because she felt that too many people had to suffer and pay the price for Cole's actions. She thought 2 days on an island won't change anyone.
2.      What made Garvey think that Cole could change?
  • I think that Garvey believes in Cole because he said you can't change a person in two days but you can change a person's direction of change. Garvey sees the potential in Cole and thinks he can be changed.
3.     Why does Cole need to lose his anger?
  • I think Cole needs to get rid of his anger because then he can move on with life. Edwin helped Cole but may not have worked. Edwin said that you can't lose anger but you have to learn to control it.
4.     Why did Garvey and Edwin want to make Cole return to Minneapolis?
  • Garvey and Edwin made Cole return because they thought Cole's attitude had returned to him. "There's not enough room on this island for both you and your attitude".

5.      Why was Cole scared of being alone on the island for a year?
  • Cole was scared because when he did all the bad things before he was alone and now that he is alone with no one to help him the memories are coming back and haunting him.

Dayton.C quoter.

For the second section I am doing quot-er and here to show you what five quotes stand out to me.

 1. " Looks like you will be spending the night at Rosie's One Star Hotel"
The reason this quote stands out to me is because when Cole is in his hospital bed the nurse is trying to cheer him up with solemn humor when he is in pain. pg.103

2. " Edwin said " You will survive through anything." This quote is saying a positive statement to bring Cole to a happy and calm state of mind. Now that Cole is knowing he will survive he will be more positive and happy. pg.103

3. " You remind me alot of myself when i was a kid' Said Garvey. This quote stands out a lot because this is when Garvey and Cole start to bond and this is when Cole realizes that Garvey was no different than him. So now Cole knows he can trust Garvey because he was no different than Cole. pg.107

4. " If I like the cake, maybe the ingredients are okay to". This quote stood out to me because what it is saying is if you like something but you after found out it had another thing you don't like at all, maybe you will learn you might like something once you try it. pg.110

5. Edwin shook his head. '' A person is never done being mad, Anger is a memory never forgotten. You just have to tame it.'' This quotes catches my eye because that is true in real life. You can never forget anger, you just have to learn how to control it. pg.110

Sean Question Creater

Why did Cole let Peter beat him up?

Cole let Peter beat him up because he didn't want to hurt Peter again. Cole was trying to become friends with Peter but Peter would not accept.

Why does Peter deny Cole's friendship?

He is still very mad at Cole for beating up and now he is depressed. He may never recover from what Cole did to him.

Why does Cole try to become friends with Peter?

He wants to show to Peter and everyone else that he has truly changed. I think Cole feels bad about how he acted in his younger years and wants to make up for them.

Why does Cole choose to dance?

Cole likes to dance because it helps release his anger and express himself. I think dancing is good for Cole because it makes him happy.

Will Peter and Cole ever become friends?

I think Cole and Peter will become friends because I think Peter realizes that Cole has truly changed and he is not that bad of a guy anymore. They will probably be friends for a long time because they will always be bonded by this experience.

1.""Discover yourself," Edwin said. "Celebrate being alive!"" pg 139

I think that this inspirational quote means that you shouldn't take being alive for granted and you should always enjoy the little things in life. When he says discover yourself I think what he means is figure out what you are good at and what you can do to make the world a better place.

2."Half of being trusted is to trust" pg 143

This is a very realistic quote that is why I chose it. I think that if somebody wants to trust you they have to believe that you trust them back. This takes both of the people to fully commit. Or just one person committing to themselves and their goals.

3.""We'll dance the whale dance tonight," Edwin said." 147

I think that this quote has more to do then just dancing. I think the deeper meaning is dancing is a way to release tension. I think the whales represent change and new things because Cole has never seen them before so it is new to him.

4. ""Pride has no place on this island," Edwin answered." pg 149

This quote by Edwin is representing how before Cole would beat up people just because they weren't scared of him. Edwin is saying that the island doesn't care that Cole thinks he's tough. The island will not care about his feelings because it does not have any feelings.

5."What are you doing?" Cole asked.
"Touching my ancestors."

This quote is saying how everybody has different beliefs. Cole may not believe that you can touch ancestors but Edwin does. It is also representing how Cole and Edwin have become closer and are able to talk about personal things like this.

David Kope Character comandment

In this section Cole asked to be able to go back to the island. About half way threw this section Cole gets another try to live on the island for a year. so he does go back to the island. He was really happy that he gets to go back to island and try to prove to the youth justice commite that he can change. I think he is more happy though because he doesent have to be in jail. I think that Cole has changed after the spirit bear attack because now he wants to change and become a better person. He also learned from the spirit bear attack that he is not the strongest thing in the world. Cole has defiantly changed in this section. He has learned that he needs to work for everything and nothing is just going to get handed to him.

-"When Peter tried to escape, he tripped and fell to the ground. Cole jumped on him again and started smashing his head against the sidewalk." Pg 7

Cole has anger problems. He gets mad very easy and it doesn't take much for him to start being violent. Cole feels powerful when he hurts other kids. He is actually taking out his anger on

-"That's bull!" Cole shouted suddenly, although he wasn't holding the feather. "You drink until you can't stand up, and you're gone all the time. A devoted parent doesn't whip his kid until a shirt can't hide all the bruises!" pg 46

Cole gets very mad at his dad because he is harmed by him. His dad has a drinking problem which is causing him to be a bully so he can let off some steam.

-"The cake sucks!" He shouted. "And so does my life!"
pg 30

Cole takes his anger out on the cake even though it didn't purposely do any thing to make him mad. It just shows you how easily agitated Cole is.

-“Standing all alone on the shore, Cole felt his anger smouldering. Soon it would explode like gunpowder.”  pg 24

Cole gets frusterated by the smallest things. He explodes every time and he can never control it even if he tried.

-“All Cole did was pretend he was sorry for a few days till things blew over.” pg 8

All his life Cole has been making people believe he was sorry and getting away with the things that he has done. He has never had to face the consequences. So when he has do it will be a shock to him. I think if there are consequences he will actually be sorry for what he did.

                                          Mood Maven.

In Touching Spirit Bear throughout the whole first section of the novel was mostly a negative mood setting, here are five quotes straight from the book to back up my reason as to why I believe it is a bad mood setting.

1. " People gathering to watch me off. I guess people were glad I was leaving and banished".

2.  " I'm not afraid of dying" stammered cole

3. "Step back or I will kill you" yelled Cole towards the bear.
5. " Was there even any need for me, was I worthless?"

4. " I hate this place I don't need this shelter"

Why Touching Spirit Bear Connects To Me

1. Peter is kinda like my brother.(except for the suicidal part) Every time I do something bad to him he tries to get payback by beating the living crap out of me.

2. My family always tries to forgive and to forget. Cole tries to do the same with Peter except sometimes it doesn't work out so smoothly.

3. Garvey and Edwin are kinda like coaches for Cole. They try to swing him into a good straight and narrow pass. This relates to me because I have coaches for sports who try to help me become better.

4. Circle Justice is like family. They sit around and argue about the problems we have in our lives. All of us can relate to this.

David kope. Question creator

      1. Why would Cole try to kill the spirit bear?
  • He wanted to kill the spirit bear because he hated when people were not scared of him and the bear was showing no fear by standing right in front of Cole.
      2. Why wouldnt Cole grab something more than a knife?
  • I think he just went to attack the spirit bear with a knife because he thinks that no one is stronger then him and he only needed a knife and not anything more.
       3. Why did Cole eat the Mouse?
  • I think he was going to do anything to survive and he had to eat the mouse otherwise he would probably starve to death.
      4. Why would Cole throw the Spirit bear fur into the water?
  • I think he threw the spirit bear fur into the water because he wanted a fresh start with no lies.
      5. Is Cole going to go back to the Island or will he go to jail?
  • I think Cole will return to the Island and have another meeting with the spirit bear.

Sean Connector

Could you imagine being attacked by a 300 pound beast. That is what happen to Cole. Obviously I haven't been attacked by a bear and probably never will be. But I have seen a bear up close and it was very nerve racking. I don't understand why Cole ever thought that he could kill the bear, if I was him I would have stayed well clear of the bear. When I saw the bear my first reaction was to run away from it, luckily I was in a group of people so it was not as frightening. I think if I was going to fight a bear, I would want more dangerous weapons then a makeshift spear and a knife. Don't bring a knife to a bear fight.

Touching The Spirit Bear.

In this picture a kid named Cole Matthews is banished on an island in southwest Alaska were he is approached by a Spirit Bear. Cole has anger management issues and has no love for nature or any of the animals in that are in it. So Cole decides to pull out a rusty dull dagger to try and kill the Spirit Bear. The Bear notices so it gets up on its two legs ready to attack Cole. Cole is then mauled by the bear having several scars on his back and front side of his body while the Spirit Bear does not have a single scratch mark.

This picture represents Cole's stupidity to the surroundings on the Island. He thinks that he is at the top of the food chain on the Island but he is not. Other animals on the Island also get hungry to. The background consists of trees, showing how dense the forest was on the island when you go away from the shore.

Zach Question Creator

1. Why did he burn his shelter and supplies?
  • Because he was angry at everything because of what happened to him.
2. Why is he not scared of the spirit bear?
  • Because he thinks he's tough.
3. Why is Cole so angry?
  • Because he was beaten as by his dad and was put on a remote island by himself for a year.
4. Was Cole always bad?
  • I think so because he had a troubled childhood he was beaten and that's why he does the things he does.
5. What was Cole like as a kid?
  • I think he may have been normal until he got a little older and started getting beaten.

David Kope. Connecter

I connect to this story a lot because my
brother used to beat me up a lot and never got in trouble except for a few times when I told on him. It connects with the book when Cole beats lots of people up and does a lot of bad crimes but never really got in trouble until he gave Peter a brutal beating and gave him brain damage. I also connect with the first part of this story because I watched a movie that was similar with the first part of the story where the main character was always doing crimes and getting away with them until one day he is sentenced to jail. It connects to this story when Cole is constantly committing crimes and not getting punished until he has to go to the island alone.

Touching Spirit Bear

"Fall seven times, stand up eight." - Japanese Proverb pg.3
This quote relates to Cole, because even though he has a tough time with his family life, and also with his personal life he seems to still get back up on his feet and do stupid things to get in him in jail. Going to jail for him is the falling down part. The getting back up part is when he is freed from jail because of his family bailing him out.

"Patience, gentleness, strength, honesty. Animals can teach us more about ourselves than any other teacher" -Tlingit Elder pg.1
Cole can sometimes  lack patience, gentleness, strength, and honesty. Most of the time Cole is obnoxious, violent, and is very distrustful. Cole can sometimes be a complete psychopath. Once he was sent out to the island for his banishment, and when the elder and Edwin left, Cole burnt down his only way of survival.

"I don't know how to heal emotional and physical damage. Scars run deep." -Garvey pg.35
What Garvey is trying to say to Cole, is that his past can not be changed or altered. His Dad was mostly the one who left emotional and physical damage on Cole.

"Talk is cheap. They want you to walk the talk."-Garvey pg.21
People can say as much as they want to some extent. But if they can't prove that they can do, what they talk about then there word means nothing to people. That is why you have to walk your talk.

"Life is a circle."-Garvey pg.34
Our life is basically a circle. A circle can represent an infinite life style in where Coles life starts of from one point and keeps doing the same thing over and over again. His circle starts by committing a crime, being caught, begging for mercy, being let free, then starting all over again. His family and friends want him to break that circle.
